About The Project
Situated in the quiet Springlake Neighborhood in Atlanta, GA, the Kempe home was a very typical Atlanta “English” style cottage that their children had always referred to as the "Red Brick House". As the area around them increased in property values, the Kempe's saw the need to update the look of the home without "breaking the bank" on a full blown renovation.
The Construction:
The large slatted gable vent was removed as well as the surrounding brick veneer to allow for the installation of an arch topped window in the top of the gable. After the window was installed, the retained brick was mended back onto the veneer to create a seamless installation.
With the closing of the attic gable, new ventilation would need to be added to allow adequate air flow in the unconditioned space. New low-profile soffit vents were installed along with (2) temperature controlled powered attic fans in the attic to keep the house comfortable
The existing front picket fence was removed. New stack stone columns were set along with pressure treated timber rails
The traditional louvered shutters were removed and replaced with new Extira© Board and Batten profile shutters with operable hinges and shutter dogs
The existing brick front stoop was removed and a new 5’ x 10’ front porch was added. The new porch had recessed lighting install to aid in night time visibility
The plain front of the residence was augmented with a new treated wood pergola over the living room windows.
A new 5-color paint palette was chosen for the new exterior of the residence to update the look of the “red brick house” to a more contemporary feel.
